ENGL 3800 is an introductory course that studies and practices original poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and drama. In this course, “students engage in workshops in which they plan, write, critique and revise their own and others’ writing” (English Electives by Concentration).
I was in heaven – in complete love with this course as I was taking it. I was finally able to write about anything and absolutely everything that came to my mind. To top it off, I was able to workshop my thoughts and the various pieces of writing in this creative writing course.
This course felt like home. Not only did the art of workshopping break down everyone’s walls, it created a safe space for my colleagues and me. We poured ourselves into the characters that we were creating and the twisted moments that we were writing about. It took a lot of vulnerability and trust when writing about personal moments and then allowing strangers to criticize my way of describing those moments. But every moment of this course was worth it.
I have always enjoyed writing although I’ve always known that I lack many skills that it takes to be an influential, strong writer. This course, however, allowed me to cross bridges within my writing. I didn’t just learn how to put my thoughts on paper in chronological order and, in essence, call it a story – I learned how to actually tell the story.
